TRAINERS:
LEE SWINSCOE:
Lee Swinscoe is an accessibility specialist with Universal Designers and Consultants. Coach Swinscoe has been a SPark trainer since 2003. He has also coached for Pegasus and Maryland’s High Performance Hockey Center. Coach Swinscoe began his hockey career in 1986 in South Africa where he played both boys field hockey in high school and played for the Ixopo Village adult team. Coach Swinscoe was selected for the Natal Midlands U/19 Team in 1995 and played for Natal Technikon in 1996 while studying. He then moved on to England where he played for Oxton Hockey club from 1996-1997 and for Bebington from 1997-1998. In the U.S., Coach Swinscoe played for Mavericks Field Hockey Club from 2000-2006; represented DC Metros during the four seasons of the North American Premiere League; played for the New York Islanders Field Hockey Club from 2003-2009; and today plays for the DC Dragons.
JESSE LARSON:
Jesse began his field hockey career in 1995 as a member of the Baltimore Field Hockey Association. He continued as a college player at Salisbury University’s club team from 1997-2001. Between 2001-2004, Jesse played for the DC Dragons and then was named to the U.S. Indoor Team where he played in the Pan Am Indoor Cup in Venezuela in 2004, in 2006 in Canada where the team won a Bronze metal, and again in 2008 in Argentina winning the Gold. Between 2005-2006, Jesse played for the Menzieshill Hockey Club in Scotland and was named the U.S. Outdoor Squad in 2006. In 2007-2008, Jesse also has extensive coaching experience including men’s head coach at St. Andrew’s University, JV head coach at Elizabeth Seton High School, and head coach of AMVJ Amsterdam’s youth program.
COACHES:
CASEY POHLMEYER:
Coach Pohlmeyer is a Sophomore at the University of New Hampshire. Coach Pohlmeyer is a two-time Junior Olympian who participated in the National Futures Championship for five years where her team won first place one year and second the next. During her club career, Casey has participated in the NITs since 2004, winning the A pool in 2006 and Pool winners in 2008. She participated in Festival beginning in 2005, winning the G pool in 2007. Casey also played on the SPark 07 team at the National Indoor Club Championships where her team took 1st place among the top elite clubs in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. Casey's 2009 honors - First team All State, First team All County and made the NFHCA All Region South Team. A varsity starter for four years at Severna Park High School, Casey was a member of four State Championship teams. Coach Pohlmeyer was recognized as the top Scholar-Athlete at Severna Park High School.
SUE BEHRINGER:
Coach Behringer is the Assistant Head Coach in charge of defense at Severna Park High School. During her twenty years at Severna Park, Sue has helped the Falcon’s to a record-breaking 318-21-4 record. Coach Behringer’s defenses have allowed only 157 goals (.46 per game). Since Coach Behringer’s arrival, Severna Park High School has won 17 of 19 county and regional championships and won 13 Maryland state championships. Sue has mentored many field hockey defenders and goalies that have gone on to play at all levels of NCAA competition. Prior to coming to Severna Park High School, Sue was the Head Lacrosse Coach at Seton Keough High School in Baltimore for eleven years. She has coached field hockey and lacrosse teams for the Green Hornets Recreation Program. Coach Behringer was a lacrosse and field hockey starter for Bucknell University where she is a member of the Bucknell Hall of Fame for Lacrosse.
BETZ WILD:
Coach Wild is a Physical Education teacher and Athletic Director at St. Martin’s in-the-Field Day School. Betz has coached both indoor and outdoor Spark teams for five years, taking Spark teams to Festival, Disney and the National Indoor Tournament. At the NITs, her teams have finished first in the U16 A pool in 2007 and the U19 pool championships in 2008. Betz began her playing career at Severna Park High School, winning the Maryland State Championship in 1980 and 1981, serving as captain her senior year. She was a member of Salisbury University’s National Championship team in 1986 and still plays field hockey in the Anne Arundel County Summer Recreation league with her team which captured four of the last six championships. Betz was inducted into the Severna Park High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
MOIRA LEAVITT:
Coach Leavitt is the Head Lacrosse Coach at Spalding High School. Moira began her coaching career as an Assistant Coach for Villanova’s Field Hockey Team and then as the inaugural coach at Salve Regina University in Rhode Island. Coach Leavitt moved on as Head Coach at Norfolk Academy and at Seton Keough High School. Moira played field hockey for William Smith College where she played in two National Championships and was selected to the All-American team in 1987.
LAUREN MARANTO:
Coach Maranto graduated from Severna Park in 2004, with honors as All state player of the year, 2 time all Metro, 3 time all county and a state championship. COach Maranto played on first SPark indoor team, Sophomore-Senior year, along with the SPark traveling team. In the Fall of 2004 she played for DII Shippensburg University and finished out her college career playing club at Maryland. At UMD, her club team had 3 showings in final 4, with 2 national titles. Outside of Spark, Coach Maranto coaches for Green Hornets and Futures. In her first year of SPark, she coached U16, followed by U19 last year, and is now in her third year and is coaching U16. Coach Maranto is a project manager and an estimator for a geothermal drilling company in Baltimore.
SHANNON GARDEN:
Coach Garden is a former county defensive All-Star. Coach Shannon has been coaching Field Hockey locally for 11 years. She most recently finished her second season at the helm of Archbishop Spalding's JV. Both years her team finished at the top of of the IAAM conference. She coached her team to score 44 goals and only had four goals scored against in 12 games. In 2010, her team outscored its opponents 41 to seven.
Coach Shannon is also an accomplished youth and highschool field hockey official presiding over several post-season and championship games.
CARISSA MESSIMER HYMAN:
Coach Hyman is an attorney at Council, Baradel, Kosmerl & Nolan, P.A. in Annapolis, Maryland. Carissa is a graduate of the University of Maryland (2004) and the University of Baltimore School of Law (2008). A four-year starter on the field hockey team for the Terrapins, Carissa was a two-time All-American and earned the Kate Kauffman Award for Most Outstanding Field Hockey Player in 2002, as well as the Susan B. Tyler Award in 2003, naming her the University of Maryland Female Athlete of the Year. While at Maryland, Carissa played on a team that amassed a four-year record of 80-14, won three ACC titles, reached the NCAA semifinals three times and captured the 1999 National Championship over Michigan on Carissa’s game-winning goal. Carissa also served as a student assistant coach for the Terrapins following her senior season. Before college, Carissa played field hockey at Crestwood High School in Mountaintop, PA where she was a two-time NFHCA All-American and a three-time Pennsylvania All-State selection. Her 49 goals in 1998 was a Pennsylvania high school single-season record and her 145 career goals set the Pennsylvania career high school scoring record; in 1998 she also clenched the third-highest career total ever recorded by a U.S. high school player. Carissa has played on U.S. National teams since 1997, and was a member of the U.S. Senior National Team in 2003/2004.
KIM DELLA:
Coach Della played field hockey and lacrosse in high school. Coach Della conitinued her lacrosse career at the University of Maryland for 4 years and played in the NCAA Division 1 Narional Championship game. She has been coaching for Bays field hockey and lacrosse for the last 5 years. She also Coaches for CC Lax club teams. This is her second year as a Spark coach. Coach Della is a reading teacher at Folger Mckinsey Elementary School.
BRITTANY ZORN:
Coach Zorn is a recent graduate from Ohio University. During her four years she was part of the sweet sixteen in 2007, MAC champions her freshman/junior year, selected for the NCAA Division I women’s field hockey honor roll, and captain her senior year. While at OU she transitioned from defense to offense and then back to defense her junior and senior year. Coach Zorn graduated from Severna Park high school in 2007 and helped her team earn the state, region, and county titles in 2005 and 2006. She participated in Festival beginning in 2005, winning the G pool in 2006. Brittany has also played indoor for Spark all throughout high school.
AMANDA HIMMELHEBER:
Coach Himmelheber graduated in the Spring of 2011 from the University of Maryland where she played on the field hockey team for four years. While playing for Maryland, Amanda won two Division I National Championships as well as three ACC Championships. She was also named to NFHCA and ACC All-Academic teams. Before college, Amanda played field hockey for Severna Park High School and was a two-time NFHCA All-American, All-State Player of the Year, All-Region, and All-County. She also played for SPark from 7th to 12th grade and was involved in Futures. She competed in the National Futures Tournament for four years, AAU Junior Olympics and was selected to Futures Elite. Amanda will attend Graduate School at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in June to earn her Doctorate in Physical Therapy.
KAREN DAVIS:
Coach Davis is a graduate of the University of Maryland and the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University. By day, she is a practicing attorney, by night a mother of four and a field hockey fan during all the minutes in between. Coach Davis is a member of the SPark Board of Directors and has been the field hockey Commissioner of Crofton Athletic Council for the past few years. Her coaching experience includes field hockey and lacrosse positions at the recreational level and within the middle school scholastic league. After several years as a volunteer for SPark and attending numerous Disney and Festival tournaments, this is her first season coaching for SPark.
JOE BORNEMAN:
Coach Borneman was an All-state baseball player in High School and went to West Chester University to play baseball. Coach Borneman played Club Ice Hockey for West Chester University. He transfered to Universtiy of Maryland and played Club Ice Hockey for the University. During college he volunteered to coach at beginner hockey clinics throughout MD and continued after he had graduated. Coach Borneman is a USA Hockey Certified Coach and coached the Howard Ice Hockey Travel Club Team. He was introduced to field hockey 5 years ago and coached at the Junior Level for Crofton. This past season, his team won the Junior B County Championship. Coach Borneman is also a 2x Ironman triathlete, in 2012 he will be competing in his third, Ironman Arizona.
